OPENING KEYNOTE - The ROI of Trust: The Surprising Driver of High-Performance Teams
This highly-interactive and experiential keynote session will introduce the concepts of “psychological safety “and vulnerability-based trust as drivers of high performance, and conclude with the application of these concepts to real-life situations.

“Psychological safety” has recently emerged in the research as a key driver of high performance. In its extensive 2013-2014 study on high-performing teams, Google defines “psychological safety” as an environment in which “team members feel safe to take risks and be vulnerable with each other.”  When this type of “safe space” is established by people at the start of their group experience, the extent to which they can share with each other, learn together, and connect at a deeper level grows exponentially.  Trust becomes the foundation of their interactions.  The trust we build with people every day is called “common trust”, which is distinct from what the research highlights as most characteristic of high-performing teams known as “vulnerability-based trust.”  The only way to build this type of trust in a group or team is by creating an environment of “psychological safety.“ Once we know how to create the sense of safety that fosters this trust, we have the essential elements needed to help teams accelerate their progress toward high performance.  


At the close of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the experience that is created in an environment defined by “psychological safety.”
  • Identify the behaviors necessary to foster vulnerability-based trust.
  • Apply psychological safety to a real-life situation in order to deepen trust and elevate performance.


Cathy Ach, Co-Founder and Principal - Soulstice Group LLC 
Cathy is a specialty coaching practice focused on transforming people’s lives, team performance and organizational culture.  She became certified in 2015 as a Daring Way Facilitator in both of Brené Brown’s programs, Daring Way and Rising Strong, and has experienced the profound impact of this work on her own life.  She has also built a strong connection between this work and her well-established coaching and consulting practice by helping leaders enhance their authenticity and dramatically increase their overall effectiveness. In 2016, Cathy started offering a series of highly interactive workshops with her business partner, Cathe Russe.  These programs are designed to support people in transforming their lives so they can more fully pursue their life purpose and long-term goals.

Cathe is a specialty coaching firm dedicated to transforming people’s lives, team performance and organizational culture. Before embarking on her own entrepreneurial venture in 2004, Cathe spent nearly three decades as an academic at Johns Hopkins University, a management consultant with Booz Allen Hamilton, and in-line and staff positions at Baxter Healthcare and Nestlé.  She is accomplished at leading strategic planning sessions, mentoring high performing teams, facilitating dynamic group processes and creating experiential learning programs.



Tribal Leadership – Meeting Your Tribe Where They Are So You Can Get Them Where You Want To Go
In a highly interactive presentation, Ken will provide ripped-from-the-headlines examples of each tribal stage identified in the New York Times #1 Bestseller Tribal Leadership by CultureSync’s own Dave Logan, John King, and Halee Fischer-Wright. Their 10-year study of more than 24,000 people in two dozen organizations that identified five stages of employee tribal development — Life Sucks, My Life Sucks, I'm Great (and You're Not), We're Great, and Life Is Great — each have their own structure, language, needs and capabilities.

The key takeaways through this tour-de-stages are:

  • Tying leadership development initiatives to organization strategy using the tribe as the framework

Ken Perlman is consultant, facilitator, speaker, husband and dad who works with leaders and teams to do better, faster, now, and for good. Ken has 25 years’ experience consulting to market leaders – Kaiser Permanente, Levi Strauss & Co., Warner Bros., NetApp, Coty, Nordstrom, Nestlé – to market makers looking to take on the world. Building on his accomplishments in leadership and change with Deloitte., John Kotter’s Kotter International, Ken now works with Dave Logan and the CultureSync tribe to integrate consulting, education, and coaching to help leaders upgrade and synchronize their organization’s cultures with their strategy. In addition to client work, Ken teaches leadership and organization design for high performance at the University of Southern California Marshall School of Business MBA program.  Ken lives in Huntington Beach with his wife, whom he’s been dating for 30 years, and their two daughters.  Ken received his B.A. from Claremont McKenna College, where he served as the research assistant at the Kravis Leadership Institute. He also earned his M.B.A. from the University of Southern California.

Tom Walter, Chief Culture Officer – Tasty Catering

Tom Walter describes himself as a “serial entrepreneur.” He started his first business—a fast food restaurant called Tasty Pup—in 1971, with the help of his girlfriend’s monetary investment.Over the years, Tasty Pup evolved from its origins as a fast food restaurant, through many other food-related businesses, and into the Tasty Catering of today, which remains Tom’s primary and largest investment.



Sandee Kastrul, President & Co-Founder – i.c.stars

Sandee Kastrul is president and co-founder of i.c.stars, an innovative nonprofit leadership and technology training program founded in 1999 to prepare inner-city adults for technology careers and community leadership.Prior to i.c.stars, Sandee’s experience as an educator, diversity trainer, educational consultant and a performing artist drew her creative talents to the forefront. Her accomplishments include designing a comprehensive science and civics interactive program for GED students at Jobs for Youth, implementing a professional development program with Harold Washington College Career Center, developing experiential learning modules for over 70 schools and creating artist in residency programs as well as training artists to work in classrooms for arts organizations.

Fellicia Foster, Talent Acquisition Strategy Advisor – Diversity – BMO Harris Bank

Fellicia works as assistant vice president, enterprise diversity talent acquisition strategy advisor for BMO Harris Bank. She is the current president of the National Association for African Americans in Human Resources – Chicago Chapter, member of the American Heart Association – Multicultural Executive Leadership Committee, and has served as a panelist or speaker at numerous nonprofit and educational events.

If that wasn’t enough to finally impress her parents, Amanda has grown Jellyvision’s revenue by more than 6x since becoming CEO in 2011. Amanda was named CEO of the Year at the Moxie Awards two years in a row, most recently made the 2017 Crain’s Chicago Tech 50 list, and,has been profiled in the Chicago Tribune, Crain’s Chicago Business and Fortune Magazine. She is very active in Chicago’s startup community, serving on the advisory boards of 1871 and The Starter League, where she teaches, as well as mentoring at TechStars, where she was named 2013 Mentor of the Year. Prior to joining Jellyvision, Amanda managed global brands for Kellogg’s while at Leo Burnett, where she delivered campaigns for both pillars of the bread-encased fruit industry—Pop-Tarts and Nutri-Grain bars. Mrs. Lannert also enjoys a good cupcake.

Everyone wants to belong. It is human nature to want to find a group of people you just click with; to find your tribe, so to speak, and in modern marketing, this need can be an invaluable asset to growing a business and loyal fan base. What is a Tribe, exactly?  A tribe is a group of people who are connected to each other, a leader, and an Idea.  Tribesmen follow the same culture, the same beliefs. In business, they not only buy and use your products, but spread the word, and help grow your business. Casey McEuin, Executive Director - ProjectRELO

Casey McEuin is a leader, adventurer, prolific networker, and the Executive Director of Project RELO. Like so many of our veterans, McEuin is focused on mission, purpose, and making an impact in our communities, companies, and country. He currently directs his keen sense of commitment to the worthy endeavor of pinpointing the intersection between business talent needs and the skills, training, and rich character of our transitioning veterans. The wellspring of Mr. McEuin’s commitment is the unique combination of optimism and hardship. At the age of 25, McEuin was an aspiring Olympic athlete and a fierce competitor on the Army’s Tae Kwon Do team. Eight years later he earned the Purple Heart when he was shot through the back in Afghanistan. And in that same instant, he lost the use of his legs. Hardship is no match for optimism. Despite being told that the paralysis was permanent, Casey insisted that he would walk again. Nearly two and a half years later, he did exactly that. Discharged from the military after his recovery, his struggle continued as he worked to assimilate into a society that was unable to understand the full extent of what a veteran of 17 years had to offer the workforce.
