“Sure, go ahead and tear up my kitchen, yank the cabinets out, replace those counter-tops, and pry those awful tiles from my floor. Yes, I know you don’t have a plan. But I trust you…just do it.” Said nobody. Ever. The problem with workplace culture remodeling is that we think we have that one design that’s going to make all the difference; we think we know exactly what needs to be improved. Intuition, know how, and a fortitude for DIY can go a long way we're rearranging the living room. But when we mess with something as dynamic and intricate as the human workplace, that stuff is nothing more than a recipe for disaster. Organizations often embark on major remodeling efforts without blueprints. They don’t use data, they rely on misinformed assumptions, they spitball it. They chase improvements that amount to shiny objects; they fix things that don’t need fixing. Maybe it results in something that’s prettier. Maybe. But most often, that certain something has nothing to do with what’s going to drive the organization’s success. It’s like spending a pretty penny on a new kitchen only to find your basement foundation is about to crumble like a Roman colosseum.
In this engaging session, we’ll explore what a blueprint for your culture and your world-of-work should and shouldn’t include. We’ll consider tangible opportunities to thoughtfully draft your blueprint – based on data, analytics, and a deeper understanding of who you really are, how you really work today, and what’s going to drive your success tomorrow. Finally, we’ll give you some tools for ensuring your internal teams stick to the blueprint, while heightening visibility to it, assigning responsibility for it, and instilling accountability around it.

Charlie Judy built a successful career as an HR executive over 25 years with some of the world’s most prominent professional services firms like Deloitte, Navigant, and Baker Tilly. He has traversed the global economy while working and living in New Orleans, St. Louis, New York, Brussels, Belgium, Hyderabad, India, and Chicago. He’s a regular speaker, prolific writer, and well known future-of-work pundit who has resolved to re-humanize the workplace while disrupting the traditional paradigms of management to which we’ve fallen prey. Charlie is the Founder and CEO of WorkXO, a Chicago-based workforce technology company. He’s a graduate of Tulane University, a CPA, an SPHR, and a SHRM-SCP.

Betsey McCann, Ph.D. Head of People Operations - Valkyrie Trading
Dr. Betsy McCann has a vibrant laugh and loves doing serious work in empowering and uplifting ways. As Head of People Operations at Valkyrie Trading, she combines her passion for employee empowerment with her culture-building skills to promote Valkyrie's spirit of intellectual collaboration. Dr. McCann earned her Ph.D. in Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communications from Texas A&M University with an emphasis on international agricultural development and organizational leadership. Her dissertation created an ethics-driven program planning and evaluation framework for working in resource-limited contexts and incorporated a case study of her work with the Center for Farmworker Families in Cuquio, Jalisco.

Matt Garvey is the Director of Talent Acquisition for Relativity, who are the developers of the industry-leading eDiscovery and unstructed data platform that helps its more than 165,000 users organize data, discover the truth, and act on it. Matt has extensive experience in developing winning talent acquisition strategies and building a high performing recruitment and talent management process that incorporates new recruiting tools and performance analytics. In his current role, Matt leads efforts to elevate Relativity’s global employer brand, identify emerging talent acquisition trends and technologies, and recruit diverse, dynamic and creative professionals that are a solid match for Relativity’s strong, values-driven culture, primarily focusing on recruitment to Relativity’s Chicago headquarters. William J. Tarnow II, Partner - Neal Gerber Eisenberg
Bill Tarnow is chair of Neal Gerber Eisenberg’s Labor & Employment practice group and a member of the firm’s Executive Committee. He represents and counsels companies and management in all facets of business and employment law and employment-related litigation before federal and state courts and administrative agencies. Bill has litigated a variety of disputes, ranging from trade secret, breach of fiduciary duty, restrictive covenants and breach of contract disputes, to claims of discrimination, harassment and retaliation under various statutes such as Title VII, the ADA and the ADEA in venues around the country. Bill also has defended a number of employers in both single-plaintiff and class action cases involving wage & hour, and overtime pay claims under both state and federal laws.

Drawing on insights from the fields of psychology, behavioral economics, and evolutionary biology, this session will present a variety of tools you can use to change the actions of your employees, customers, and even yourself.

Loran Nordgren, Professor of Management and Organizations - Kellogg School of Management
Loran Nordgren is an Associate Professor of Management and Organizations at the Kellogg School of Management. Loran’s research examines how contemporary environments (what he calls human ecology) affect human behavior. He uses theory-driven insights to create interventions and policy recommendations that improve decision-making and well-being. His research has published in leading journals such as Science and is regularly discussed in prominent forums such as the Harvard Business Review. In recognition of his work, Professor Nordgren has received the Theoretical Innovation Award in experimental psychology. A former Fulbright Scholar, Professor Nordgren has received numerous teaching awards for excellence in the classroom and in 2012 was named Kellogg's Management and Organization's Teacher of the Year. He is one of Poets & Quants’ 40 under 40 business school professors.
