How HR Can and Should Respond to Racism and Inequity

In Part II of this series we will pivot to explore how HR can step up as leaders within their organizations to increase awareness, equity and belonging of Black employees. We will discuss actions that can be taken around:
- Helping leaders, employees and organizations process recent events and emotions
- Responding appropriately and courageously, both intentionally listening, facilitating internal conversations, and the organization speaking out internally or externally
- Creating safe spaces for employees to share and process together, and learn how to be better allies; Support the physical safety and mental health of employees
- Take action to address internal biases and gaps to build a more inclusive organization
Michael Jones serves as the Manager of Community, Diversity and Inclusion strategies, in Human Resources, at Rush University Medical Center. Michael has extensive experience in leading strategic human capital management and acquisition and data-driven organizational process improvements. Michael is currently responsible for building-out and leading Rush’s demographic parity as it relates to local hiring initiatives; local hiring which aims to hire and retain individuals from communities that have been disinvestment throughout Chicago, primarily on Chicago’s West Side. In addition, Michael also oversees Rush’s Veterans, Individuals with Disabilities and University recruitment strategies.
Dr. Crystal T. Clark is a board-certified adult psychiatrist and an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health Sciences. She specializes in mood and anxiety disorders and is internationally recognized for her expertise in the treatment of women’s mental health broadly across the life span. Dr. Clark is a researcher who aims to optimize mental health treatment for all. Her research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health and the PhRMA foundation. As someone committed to educating the next generation of psychiatrists, she serves as a Director of advanced training in Women’s and Perinatal Mental Health and as the Associate Program Director for general adult psychiatry residency training. She is the president of the board of Marcé of North America, an organization committed to advancing mental health care for perinatal women and their families. She is also a member of the Board of Directors for Resilience.Dr. Clark received her Bachelor of Art’s in Psychology from Northwestern University and her Master’s of Science and Doctor of Medicine from the University of Louisville. She completed her psychiatry training at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, MD.Dr. Clark has been invited to contribute her mental health expertise for several media outlets including National Public Radio (NPR), New York Times, Washington Post, Atlantic, ABC 7, CBS Chicago, and Chicago Tonight.
Justin Walker leverages adaptive leadership and cross-cultural experiences from his background in entrepreneurship, non-profit management, and US Navy Special Operations to develop reliable relationships, solve problems, and move people to action. He is a management consultant based in the Chicagoland area, and he collaborates with HR/people development teams across industries to analyze, strategize, and co-create transformative employee experiences. Justin received his Bachelor's in Organizational Behavior and a certificate in Business Leadership from Northwestern University. He is also currently an MBA candidate at The University of Chicago Booth School of Business.
Moderator: Kathy Goss is an accomplished diversity, equity and inclusion strategist and practitioner. In her 17 years of diversity work she has consistently achieved tangible results in the areas of recruitment, retention, inclusion awareness and advancement. She currently serves as the Director of Inclusion Recruiting at ServiceNow, building their first diversity recruiting function from the ground up. Previously, she built LinkedIn’s diversity recruiting program, achieving double-digit percent increases in diverse hires. Kathy loves to innovate and dream big, but also always drives toward practical strategies that make a lasting and self-sustaining impact.
