Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Chicago SHRM.  Our continued success is due to the time and talents of our volunteers and we look forward to your participation on one of our many committees.

Volunteering is a great way to contribute your talents, develop leadership skills, meet other members, and enhance your professional profile. And, you can earn 3 HRCI recertification credits per year as a committee member. 

Choose among a variety of volunteer opportunities that work with your schedule. Expect to commit to 3-5 hours per month, depending on the needs of your committee.

Committee Descriptions

Included below are brief descriptions of each of our committees and the skills and experience necessary for each group. To sign-up to volunteer, or request more information, please complete the Volunteer Connection Form below. A member of the committee will be in touch shortly. 

Chicago SHRM Volunteer Expectations:

  • Have an active membership with Chicago SHRM
  • Support the mission of Chicago SHRM - Igniting Business, Elevating Careers and Building Community
  • Attend meetings and events as outlined for your respective committee
  • Serve as a role model for the human resource community


Education Committee           

The Education Committee helps HR professionals learn, connect, and advance through quality programming and development opportunities.  Chicago SHRM’s educational events cover a variety of business and HR topics to meet the needs of our current and potential members. The committee utilizes industry connections to secure dynamic speakers for events, including Elevate Conferences, Roundtable Discussions, Case Studies, Breakfast Bites, HR Team Ups and Webinars.

Areas of Interest and Expertise: Senior HR experience, strong connections to potential speakers, awareness of current industry topics and affiliation with other organizations 


Certification Committee

Provides information and support to members interested in pursuing certification and recertification credits through attendance at Chicago SHRM educational events, creates communication pieces, and works directly with members to address certification questions. 

Areas of Interest and Expertise: Must hold current certification, be knowledgeable about certification and recertification, and enthusiastic about working directly with members

Marketing & Communications Committee

The Marketing & Communications Committee engages with Chicago SHRM members about our educational events, and opportunities for development and peer connection. We are committed to supporting all Chicago SHRM committee initiatives through collaboration. 


Newsletter Committee

Creates content and helps shape the strategy for our monthly e-publication that reaches over 10,000 readers. Our diverse team also manages outside submissions, edits, and proofreads.

Social Media Committee

Works to cultivate a community around the Chicago SHRM brand. This includes a focus on attracting and engaging followers, learning how to improve our programming, exchanging ideas and information, and gettin

Areas of Interest and Expertise: knowledge and use of social networks and a passion for communication.  Expertise in promotions, PR, marketing, brand and strategy, and writing 

Membership Committee

The Membership Committee is focused on growing and developing the Chicago SHRM community through a variety of programs and services. 

College Relations Committee

Works to enhance the community of learning for the HR leaders of tomorrow. The committee provides opportunities to complement student classroom work, participate in networking opportunities, and share information on internship and job opportunities. 

Areas of Interest and Expertise: working with students, familiarity with local colleges and universities or previous experience as a local SHRM student member

Emerging HR Leaders Committee 

Focuses on providing professional career development and networking opportunities for practitioners of all ages who have recently joined the HR field. 

Areas of Interest and Expertise: working with new HR practitioners, developing pertinent content, as well as organizing events and educational workshops

Mentoring Program  

Offers a developmental program for entry and mid-level HR professionals to develop a partnership with mid- to senior-level HR professionals. 

Areas of Interest and Expertise: a passion for mentoring and development, event planning, networking, and strong communication skills

Orientation Committee 

Coordinates and facilitates four orientation events per year. Members will work together on content, presentation and follow-up for our new and prospective members. 

Areas of Interest and Expertise: event planning, content development, networking, and public speaking

Recruitment and Retention Committee

Educates new, existing and potential members on the benefits and offerings of Chicago SHRM.  

Areas of Interest and Expertise: outreach, follow-up, networking, and knowledge of Chicago SHRM programs and services


Transition Ambassadors Committee

Works closely with HR talent in transition in providing networking opportunities at conferences and events and serve as ambassadors to other committees as needed

Areas of Interest and Expertise: HR transition, event planning, and networking

Volunteer Connections Committee

Works with interested Chicago SHRM members to find the best volunteer opportunities within the Chicago SHRM organization. 

Areas of Interest and Expertise: outreach, follow-up, and participating in Chicago SHRM events


Diversity Committee 

Ensures the programs and services we provide meet the needs of all of our current and potential members and also educate the Chicago SHRM community on diversity initiatives 

Areas of Interest and Expertise: knowledge of current and emerging trends and issues in the diversity community; and educational program development

Strategic Partnerships 

Builds strong relationships with our professional service partners and the business community, which allows for the necessary access, education and resources for our members. 

Areas of Interest and Expertise: sales, networking, sponsorship solicitation, event attendance
